A

ABS Plastic Home

A rigid engineering plastic used for housings on appliances and organizers. Tougher than polystyrene, more scratch resistant than polypropylene, and safe to use around warm air but not inside a dishwasher.

Air Resistance Fitness

On a jump rope, the drag the cable feels as it travels through the air. Thinner cables cut through faster and allow higher spin speeds for double unders. Thicker PVC or beaded ropes create more drag, which slows cadence but gives beginners better rhythm feedback.

Amperage Tech

The current a charger can deliver, measured in amps. A 3 amp port charges a phone faster than a 1 amp port at the same voltage. Paired with voltage, amperage determines total wattage and therefore charging speed.

ANC Tech

Active Noise Cancellation. A microphone array samples ambient sound and plays back an inverted waveform, reducing steady drones like plane engines and office fans. Strong ANC is measured in decibel reduction rather than marketing stars.

BPA Free Kitchen

Plastic that does not contain bisphenol A, a compound once used in hard plastics and can liners that can leach into food. Reputable modern water bottles, blender jars, and food containers are certified BPA free.

Bristle Stiffness Beauty

How firm the bristles on a toothbrush, makeup brush, or cleaning tool feel. Soft and extra soft bristles are dentist recommended for daily brushing because they clean plaque without abrading enamel or gums. Makeup brush stiffness changes how much product a brush picks up and deposits.

Broad Spectrum SPF Beauty

A sunscreen that protects against both UVB rays, which drive sunburn, and UVA rays, which drive long term skin damage. An SPF number without the broad spectrum label only tells you about UVB protection.

Burr Grinder Kitchen

A coffee grinder that crushes beans between two abrasive surfaces, usually ceramic or steel. Burr grinders produce uniform particle size, which brews cleanly. Blade grinders chop randomly and produce uneven grounds that over extract and under extract at the same time.

CADR Home

Clean Air Delivery Rate, a measurement of how much filtered air an air purifier pushes out per minute, rated separately for smoke, dust, and pollen. Match CADR to room size. A low CADR unit in a large room will run constantly and still underperform.

Carbon Steel Kitchen

A knife and cookware material that is harder than stainless, takes a sharper edge, and patinas with use. Needs to be dried immediately and occasionally oiled to prevent rust. Favored by chefs who want maximum edge performance over zero maintenance.

Ceramic Nonstick Kitchen

A pan coating made from a silica based ceramic rather than a fluoropolymer like PTFE. Releases food cleanly at moderate temperatures, tolerates metal utensils poorly, and degrades faster than PTFE under heavy daily use.

Ceramic Plates Beauty

The heating surface on a hair straightener. Ceramic plates distribute heat evenly and are gentler than bare metal. Tourmaline infused ceramic adds negative ions. Titanium plates heat faster and hotter and are favored by thick or coarse hair types.

Ceramic vs Tourmaline Beauty

Two heating element materials used in hair tools. Ceramic heats evenly and is gentler on fine hair. Tourmaline emits more negative ions, which can help reduce frizz and add shine on coarse or thick hair. Many premium tools use both.

Color Temperature Home

How warm or cool a light source looks, measured in Kelvin. Around 2700K is warm and candle like, 4000K is neutral, and 5000K to 6500K reads as daylight white. Lower numbers feel cozier. Higher numbers feel clinical.

CRI Home

Color Rendering Index. A score from 0 to 100 that describes how accurately a light source reveals colors compared to natural daylight. For makeup, video, and art, look for CRI 90 or higher. Cheap bulbs often sit at 80, which flattens reds and skin tones.

Cushioning Rating Fitness

A loose description of how much a mat, insole, or running shoe absorbs impact. For yoga and pilates mats, thickness in millimeters and density in grams per cubic centimeter together give a more useful picture than the marketing label.

Decibel Rating Home

How loud a device is, on a logarithmic scale where a 10 decibel increase represents roughly double the perceived loudness. Quiet fans and air purifiers sit around 25 to 35 dB. Anything above 55 dB is too loud for a bedroom.

Dual Zone Kitchen

On air fryers and similar appliances, two independent cooking baskets that run at different temperatures and times. Useful when a main and a side finish at the same moment without flavor crossover.

Durometer Fitness

A hardness measurement for rubber and plastics. Foam rollers are commonly rated on the Shore A or Shore OO scales. A higher durometer roller is firmer and more aggressive. Beginners usually start softer.

EVA Foam Fitness

Ethylene vinyl acetate, a closed cell foam used in yoga mats, exercise mats, and jump rope handles. Lighter and cheaper than rubber, with good shock absorption, but less durable under heavy use and less grippy when wet.

A fabric or dye treatment that resists color loss from sunlight exposure. Relevant for blackout curtains, shower curtains, and outdoor cushions. Solution dyed fibers fade slower than surface dyed fibers.

Flow Rate Home

On a humidifier or water dispenser, how much liquid moves through the unit per hour. Higher flow rate raises humidity faster in larger rooms but also empties the tank faster. Match flow rate to room size rather than chasing the biggest number.

Food Grade Silicone Kitchen

Silicone rated safe for food contact across a wide temperature range, typically from below freezing up to around 450 Fahrenheit. Used in baking mats, spatulas, oven mitts, and cupcake molds because it releases cleanly and does not react with acidic foods.

GFCI Home

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. A safety outlet that cuts power within milliseconds if it detects current leaking to ground, typical in bathrooms and kitchens. Required for humidifiers, skincare fridges, and any appliance used near a sink.

HEPA H13 Home

An air filter grade that captures at least 99.95 percent of particles at the most penetrating size, typically 0.3 micrometers. H13 is the entry point for medical grade filtration under the European EN 1822 standard and is meaningfully stricter than plain HEPA.

Hot Swappable Tech

On a mechanical keyboard, a switch socket design that lets you change individual key switches without desoldering. Useful for experimenting with switch types and for replacing a single failed switch years later.

Hyaluronic Acid Beauty

A humectant molecule that binds water to the surface of the skin. Commonly used in serums and moisturizers to boost hydration. Works best when sealed in by a moisturizer above it, since on its own it can draw moisture out in dry climates.

Induction Compatible Kitchen

Cookware with a ferromagnetic base that can be heated by an induction cooktop. Test by putting a refrigerator magnet on the bottom. If it sticks firmly, the pan will work on induction. Aluminum and pure copper will not.

Induction Motor Kitchen

A motor type used in heavy duty stand mixers that runs quietly, lasts decades, and handles stiff doughs without bogging. Distinct from the universal motors in cheaper mixers, which are louder and more prone to overheating under load.

Infrared Fitness

Light just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum. In massage guns and recovery devices, infrared heat penetrates a few millimeters into tissue. In cooking thermometers, infrared sensors read surface temperature without contact.

A hair tool feature that emits negatively charged ions to break water clusters on wet hair, speeding drying and reducing static. The effect is most noticeable on fine or static prone hair and less meaningful on coarse hair.

IP Rating Home

An Ingress Protection code, like IP67, that describes resistance to dust and water. The first digit covers solids from 0 to 6. The second covers liquids from 0 to 9. IPX4 means splash resistant. IPX7 means briefly submersible.

LED Lifespan Home

The rated hours a light emitting diode holds at least 70 percent of its original brightness. Quality LEDs last 25,000 to 50,000 hours. Cheap fixtures often fail at the driver long before the LED itself fades.

Lossless Audio Tech

Audio that has been compressed without discarding data, using formats like FLAC, ALAC, or WAV. Streaming tiers like Apple Music Lossless deliver files that are bit perfect to the master. Bluetooth codecs currently cannot carry true lossless audio.

Lumens Home

A measurement of total light output from a bulb or fixture. A traditional 60 watt incandescent puts out about 800 lumens. Higher lumens mean a brighter room. For context, watts only measure energy use, not brightness.

MagSafe Tech

The magnetic charging and accessory standard introduced on iPhone 12 and later. A ring of magnets aligns the phone to chargers, wallets, and mounts. Third party accessories labeled MagSafe compatible follow the same magnet placement but may not support the full 15 watt charge speed.

Mechanical Switch Tech

A keyboard switch with a physical contact mechanism under each key. Common families include linear, which is smooth, tactile, which has a bump mid travel, and clicky, which adds an audible snap. Each switch is rated for tens of millions of keystrokes.

Microfiber Home

Motor Stall Fitness

Niacinamide Beauty

A form of vitamin B3 used in skincare serums at concentrations between 2 and 10 percent. Known for calming redness, reducing the appearance of pores, and supporting the skin barrier. Generally well tolerated, including by sensitive skin.

OLED Tech

Organic Light Emitting Diode. A display technology where each pixel makes its own light, enabling true black and very high contrast. Distinct from LED LCD, where a backlight shines through a liquid crystal layer. Appears on premium phones, monitors, and some high end keyboards.

Oven Safe Rating Kitchen

The maximum oven temperature a pan, dish, or handle can tolerate. Silicone handles often cap out around 400 Fahrenheit. Phenolic handles may cap at 350. Cast iron and bare stainless tolerate much higher. Always check the spec before broiling.

PET Plastic Fitness

Polyethylene terephthalate. A clear, lightweight plastic commonly used in reusable water bottles and blender jars. Recyclable, BPA free, and tolerates moderate heat but is not dishwasher safe on the top rack for long term use.

PFOA Free Kitchen

Cookware that does not use perfluorooctanoic acid in its nonstick coating. PFOA was phased out of US cookware manufacturing by 2013 and is no longer a common concern on new pans. PFAS free is the stricter modern label, covering a broader family of fluorinated compounds.

Planetary Mixer Action Kitchen

A stand mixer design where a single beater orbits around the bowl while spinning on its own axis. The motion contacts the full bowl surface without a second beater, which is why planetary mixers mix evenly without needing to scrape down.

PSI Fitness

Pounds per square inch, a pressure measurement. In the home, PSI shows up in shower heads, tire pumps, and pressure cookers. Higher PSI does not always mean better. Most shower heads feel best between 40 and 80 PSI.

PVC vs TPE Fitness

Two common yoga mat materials. PVC is durable, grippy when dry, and cheap, but it is a plastic and is not biodegradable. TPE is a thermoplastic elastomer that is lighter, recyclable, and latex free, but it wears faster and offers less grip in sweaty practices.

PWM Tech

Pulse Width Modulation. A method of dimming LEDs by flicking them on and off faster than the eye can see. Low frequency PWM causes visible flicker and eye fatigue for sensitive users. Quality monitor lights and ring lights either use DC dimming or high frequency PWM above 25 kHz.

Resistance Band Tube vs Loop Fitness

Tube bands use a stretchable rubber tube with handles on each end for pressing, rowing, and pulling motions. Loop bands are closed rubber circles used for hip, glute, and mobility work. Most home gyms benefit from having both formats.

Retinol Beauty

Stainless Steel Grade Kitchen

The alloy spec, typically written as 18/8 or 18/10, describing percentages of chromium and nickel. Higher nickel content means better corrosion resistance and a warmer sheen. 18/10 is the standard for quality cutlery and mixing bowls.

Suction Power Home

A vacuum metric usually expressed in pascals or air watts. Pascals measure static pressure at the intake. Air watts combine pressure and airflow and are the more honest number. Budget robot vacuums sit around 2000 Pa. Strong units reach 4000 Pa or more.

T

Thermal Cutoff Beauty

A safety feature on hair tools and small appliances that kills power when internal temperature exceeds a threshold. Prevents fires from a blocked vent or forgotten iron. Cheap tools with no thermal cutoff are a common source of bathroom fires.

Thread Count Home

The number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. For sheets and pillowcases, 200 to 400 in a good cotton is plenty. Numbers above 600 are usually inflated by counting multi ply yarns as separate threads and do not feel better.

True HEPA Home

A filter certified to capture at least 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 micrometers under the US DOE definition. HEPA type or HEPA like filters are not certified and may capture significantly fewer particles. Insist on the true HEPA label for allergy and asthma use cases.

USB C Tech

A reversible 24 pin connector used for charging, data, and video on phones, laptops, tablets, and accessories. The connector shape says nothing about the speed or power capability, which depend on the cable, port, and protocol inside the device.

USB Power Delivery Tech

UV Wavelength Beauty

The band of ultraviolet light a nail lamp emits, typically 365 nm, 395 nm, or a dual band mix. Most modern gel polishes cure best under dual wavelength LEDs. Single wavelength lamps will leave some brands tacky no matter how long you cure.

The energy capacity of a battery, calculated as milliamp hours multiplied by voltage divided by 1000. Airlines cap carry on power banks at 100 Wh without approval. A 20,000 mAh bank at 3.7 volts is about 74 Wh and is allowed.

Weight Capacity Fitness

The maximum load a piece of equipment is rated to hold. For pull up bars, laptop stands, and dumbbell racks, treat the published number as a safe ceiling, not a challenge. Quality brands test with a generous margin above the stated rating.

Wrist Strap Fitness

A tethered loop on a water bottle, jump rope, or tool that keeps it close at hand or prevents drops. On jump ropes, a well designed wrist strap keeps handles from flying out mid workout. On water bottles, it speeds one hand carries on hikes.
