Why does my webcam look grainy in low light?
Webcam sensors compensate for low light by increasing ISO (sensitivity), which introduces grain and noise. Cheaper sensors with smaller pixels perform worse in dim conditions. To improve quality without upgrading hardware, add a desk lamp or ring light positioned in front of your face even a ring light dramatically reduces grain. Webcams with larger sensors (like Sony STARVIS) handle low light significantly better.
