What thickness yoga mat should I choose?

For most practitioners, 4 6mm (about 1/4 inch) is the sweet spot. It provides enough cushion for kneeling poses while remaining firm enough for standing balances. If you have sensitive joints or do mostly floor based work, go for 6 8mm. If you travel frequently or prioritize connection with the floor, a 3mm mat is lighter and more portable. Avoid mats thicker than 8mm for yoga they feel unstable during balance poses.
