What is the difference between a laptop stand and a laptop riser?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a practical distinction. A laptop stand typically has an angled platform that tilts the keyboard toward you better for typing directly on the laptop. A riser is usually a flat elevated platform or shelf. For ergonomic use with an external keyboard, either works. For typing on the laptop itself, an angled stand is more comfortable. Risers tend to be cheaper and double as monitor stands or general desk shelves.
